Dr. Azadi received her B.Sc. in Chemistry in 1987 from University of North London, UK and her Ph.D. degree in biochemistry in 1991 from Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London, studying structural characterization of carbohydrates and glycoproteins by mass spectrometry under the supervision of Profs. A. Dell and H.R. Morris.

Dr. Azadi has also been the Technical Director of the Analytical Services since 2000 where she oversees and manages the analytical services and training at the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center, which includes three resource centers, Department of Energy Center for Plant and Microbial Complex Carbohydrates, National Institutes of Health Research Resource for Integrated Glycotechnology and National Institutes of Health Integrated Technology Resource for Biomedical Glycocmis. The service program enables glycoconjugates to be analyzed on a fee-for-service basis for the research facilities, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.

Christian Heiss

Dr. Christian Heiss received his undergraduate training in Chemistry at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany and his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at the University of Georgia on the synthesis of enzyme inhibitors and the use of enzymes for enantioselective reductions.  He then worked for 2 years at McNeil Specialty Products Co., developing methods to make chlorinated sugars.  He joined the CCRC in 2002, both as part of a start-up company trying to commercialize carbohydrate conjugates as textile chemicals and in the Analytical Services Department and is now involved primarily in the structural characterization of carbohydrates using NMR, mass spectrometry, HPLC, and GC/MS.  He also carries out the analysis of glycosaminoglycans by enzymatic and chemical degradation and mass spectrometric and chromatographic methods, as well as by NMR. He is an instructor in the CCRC Annual Summer Training Courses for graduate students, and scientists from different universities, research institutions, and private industries.

Scott Snyder

Dr. Scott Snyder has worked with the CCRC since 2004. Prior to working at the CCRC he worked for the NIH Rocky Mountain Laboratories, Baylor College of Medicine Rice University and Ribi Immunochem (now part of Glaxo Smith Kline). He has received a Ph. D. in Cell Biology and Biological Chemisty from Duke University, an M.S. in Biochemistry from the Medical College of Wisconsin and a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Idaho. Both his doctoral work and a 5 year stint with a biotechnology company involved investigations into bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS). Though analyzing the structures of novel LPS molecules remains a major focus of Dr. Snyder's work, he is currently expanding his interests to other molecules used by bacteria for self protection such as capsular and exopolysaccharides. He is an instructor in the CCRC Annual Summer Training Courses for graduate students, and scientists from different universities, research institutions, and private industries.

Roberto Sonon

Dr. Roberto Sonon obtained his Bachelor of Animal Science degree in 1981 from the Visayas State University in the Philippines.  He earned his MS and PhD degrees (Animal Nutrition) in 1991 and 1994, respectively, from Kansas State University under the direction of Dr. Keith Bolsen.  He then returned to the Philippines in 1994 and joined the faculty of the Visayas State University.

Dr. Sonon returned to the United States in 2000 and worked as a postdoctoral research associate at Iowa State University (ISU).  His research focused on enhancing the concentration of conjugated linoleic acid and omega-3 fatty acids in milk and beef through nutritional manipulation.  He trained biochemistry and animal science graduate students on lipids and fatty acid analysis, and on the use of laboratory animals for research.  At ISU, he was also involved in studying the roles of hormones, glucagon and ghrelin, on cow fatty liver disease, and adiposity.

In 2004, Dr. Sonon moved to the University of Georgia and continued to work on conjugated linoleic acid research in beef as a postdoctoral research associate at the Department of Animal and Dairy Science.  In 2006, he joined the Analytical Services Laboratory of the Complex Carbohydrates Research Center (CCRC).  His current responsibilities include structural characterization of glycoprotein oligosaccharides by mass spectrometry and HPLC, monosaccharide composition analysis of glycoproteins and polysaccharides by High pH Anion Exchange Chromatography and GC-MSD.  He is also responsible for continuous operation of all equipment in the Analytical Services Lab, upkeep of laboratory instruments such as periodic maintenance of GC-MSDs, ensuring that UGA’s safety and waste management programs are adhered to and implemented at the Analytical Services Laboratory, training graduate students from CCRC, other colleges/departments of the University of Georgia, and other universities on analytical protocols, data analysis, and use of various analytical instruments.  He serves as a resource person and assists in the management of CCRC Annual Summer Training Courses for graduate students, and scientists from different universities, research institutions, and private industries.

 

Radnaa Naran

Dr. Radnaa Naran has received her Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry working on the chemistry and structure of plant cell wall carbohydrates. She joined CCRC Analytical Services in 2007 to work on NREL-CCRC project to determine efficiency of chemical pretreatment and enzymatic breakdown of plant cell wall for bioethanol production. Prior coming to CCRC she worked on plant cell wall projects in Andrew Mort’s lab at OSU and Nick Carpita’s lab at Purdue University. Her expertise is in analysis and structural characterization of pectin and other cell wall polysaccharides using site-specific enzymes, HPLC, CZE, Mass- and NMR-spectroscopy techniques. She serves as a resource person and assists in the management of CCRC Annual Summer Training Courses for graduate students, and scientists from different universities, research institutions, and private industries.

 

Zhirui Wang

Dr. Zhirui Wang received her bachelor degree of biochemistry, and master degree in bioorganic chemistry from Jilin University, China, and earned her Ph.D in medicinal chemistry from Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, China. Her research work was including the isolation, purification and modification of proteins, the study of the interaction between proteins and small molecules, the design and synthesis of novel anti-bacteria molecules, and structure determination of small molecule by Mass spectrometry and NMR. She joined in Analytical Service of CCRC in 2007. Her current work is focusing on the isolation and purification of polysaccharides and oligosaccharides and the structure characterization of carbohydrates by Mass spectrometry, NMR and GC/MS. She serves as a resource person and assists in the management of CCRC Annual Summer Training Courses for graduate students, and scientists from different universities, research institutions, and private industries.

Mayumi Ishihara

Mayumi Ishihara received both her B.S. (1998) and M.S (2000) from the department of structural biochemistry, faculty of education, Shiga University, Japan.  Her research during bachelor’s and master’s programs dealt with the elucidation of diversity of glycosphingolipids among invertebrates.  Along her research activities, she performed techniques for the purification and structural characterization of complex glycosphingolipids, which included column chromatography, HPLC, X-ray crystallography, GC/MS, and MALDI/TOF-MS.

Ms. Ishihara is a licensed teacher of science and mathematics in elementary, middle and high school.  After obtaining her masters degree, she taught science and mathematics in a middle school in Japan for 5 years.

In 2006, Ms. Ishihara joined the Analytical Service Laboratory of the Complex Carbohydrates Research Center.  Her current work assignment is devoted to glycoproteomics, specifically on structural profiling of glycans and peptides from glycoproteins by HPLC, HPAEC, GC/MS and mass spectrometry.  Also, she has worked on the optimization of some analytical protocols being followed in the analytical services laboratory and trains graduate students from CCRC, other colleges/departments of the University of Georgia, and other universities on analytical protocols, data analysis, and use of various analytical instruments. She serves as a resource person and assists in the management of CCRC Annual Summer Training Courses.

Seongha Park

Expertise: Structure elucidation of carbohydrates by mass spectrum

Seongha received both her B.S. (1999) and M.S (2001) in Analytical Chemistry from Changwon National University, Korea on mass spectrometry and on transport of metal cation across bulk liquid membrane using acyclic polyether as a carrier. After obtaining her masters degree, she worked as an intern at the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute in Korea. She joined the Analytical Services Laboratory of the Complex Carbohydrates Research Center (CCRC) in 2007. Her present research focuses on N- and O- linked glycan and peptide structural characterization of mammalian cell and bacterial cell glycoproteins by mass spectrometry, HPLC, and GC-MS. In addition, she has been working on mapping of gycosylation sites following the 18O labeling technique by mass spectrometry. She serves as an instructor and assists in the management of CCRC Annual Summer Training Courses.

Ian Black received his bachelor degree in biochemistry from the University of Georgia.

Carol Connelly recently joined the CCRC with over 12 years of administrative experience, having spent nine years at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas in the Department of Surgery and three years at the Medical College of Georgia in the Center for Healthcare Improvement prior to relocating to Athens.
